University of Aberdeen

Aberdeen, United Kingdom

Founded in 1495 by Bishop William Elphinstone, the University of Aberdeen is Scotland’s third-oldest university and one of the five oldest in the English-speaking world. Around 15,000 students study across more than 300 undergraduate programmes, centred on the historic King’s College campus in Old Aberdeen, where the crowned tower of King’s College Chapel has stood since the late fifteenth century. The university’s degree structure is unusually flexible: students can combine and switch subjects during the early years before committing to an honours specialism. Five Nobel laureates have been associated with the institution.
First-year students are normally housed in university halls, where rooms run from roughly £151 to £191 per week with all utilities and internet included; quiet and alcohol-free residences are available. The wider Aberdeen student market starts nearer £85–£100 per week for private options. Total monthly living costs sit around £800–£1,100, making Aberdeen one of the more affordable UK student cities.
